Spring 2019
Introductory Studio

As a counterpoint to the more explorational S01, this semester’s design studio contained four separate projects. Two of analysis - one physical and the other digital, and two of design - one object and one building.
Analog Analysis - Salk Institute
Professor Chris Minnerly
Digital Analysis - La Tourette
Professor Jose Pertierra-Arrojo
The presence of architecture in La Tourette is found in the contrasting uses of light employed by Le Corbusier, in which he thinks of light in two distinct ways. First, Corbusier uses light as a planar condition in the areas encapsulating the primary axis. In contrast to this, he emphasizes the spaces on the transverse axis by using light as a dynamic element, flooding the space with figurative light. The variation of apertures around the structure create the dynamic conditions inside the space. Corbusier’s brilliant way of thinking about light and it’s relation to volume is what gives this chapel an architectural presence.

Based on the Contra-Construction series from Theo van Doesburg, this lamp takes a series of perpendicular planes of colored light and solid and combines them into a metal and acrylic structure. The
